A number of members of Deep Purple – previous and current – have spoken about an incident with the Swiss police whereas they had been recording their now-iconic hit ‘Smoke on the Water’.

Chatting with Basic Rock Journal per Music Information, founding drummer and longtime member Ian Paice revealed that whereas the band had been jamming to the observe in Switzerland, they skilled a “fairly hostile” state of affairs with the native authorities.

The band had been jamming in a cell unit in Switzerland in 1971 after the Montreux On line casino had been burned down by a fan with a flare gun. The Swiss police reportedly started knocking on the band’s door as they had been creating “a hell of a racket”.

Paice revealed: “There was no sound-proofing and we had been recording at evening. A hell of a racket!”

Founding guitarist and former member Ritchie Blackmore added: “We did ‘Smoke On The Water’ there, and the riff I made up within the spur of the second. I simply threw it along with lan Paice. Roger Glover joined in.”
