Classic lace and the intricate innards of cells affect the thread elements of Susanna Bauer’s crocheted works. The German artist, who lives within the U.Okay., stitches leaves she’s discovered, washed, and dried, a painstaking course of made extra laborious by the inherent fragility of the fabric. “Taking time beneath bushes, gathering leaves, considering their shapes, imperfections, and particulars lies on the foundation of my course of. Together with this quiet gathering, tales kind, dialogues between leaves emerge, reflections on time and alter and interpersonal connections,” Bauer shares.
Most of the artist’s current works are on view as a part of her solo present Gathering Tales, which interprets these conversations and themes into three-dimensional items. Much like her earlier sequence, this new assortment is numerous in species and crocheted patterns. In “Sum of Components,” numerous segments from six totally different bushes are spliced with pure cotton thread, whereas “Blossom” surrounds a single magnolia leaf with fibrous filigree.
