Twisters, the long-gestating sequel to 1996’s Twister, has received its first trailer. Watch it below.
Beginning with a thrilling chase scene between a car and an encroaching tornado, the trailer introduces us to the film’s ensemble cast, led by Daisy Edgar-Jones, Glen Powell, and Anthony Ramos. Interlaced between shots of epic storms, we then get glimpses of everything from a love story to literal “twin tornados” to end-of-the-world level destruction and more, with the thrill of the chase prominently featured throughout.
The plot relays the story of Kate Cooper (Edgar-Jones), a former storm chaser lured back into the field by her friend, Javi (Ramos), to test a new tracking system. Encountering a reckless counterpart who’s become a social media superstar (Powell), Cooper soon finds herself in a historic disaster: a never-before-seen convergence of tornados over central Oklahoma.
The original Twister starring Helen Hunt and Bill Paxton was a massive hit, grossing $495 million worldwide on its way to becoming the second-highest-grossing film of 1996.
News of a Twister reboot first surfaced in 2020, with the sequel coming into form two years later, when Smith’s script caught Steven Spielberg’s attention and led to the film being fast-tracked.
Twisters storms into theaters on July 19th.
